Acrylic / Steel Display - Client: The Sheffield College.

The Sheffield College are currently in the middle of major redevelopment and transformation project. A new purpose built ‘vocational’ city campus will soon become reality as modern and inspiring buildings present a new era. Along with the latest workshops and classrooms Sheffield College also has its very own ‘on-site’ award winning nursery.

The Nursery required a plaque which would mark it’s official opening on Friday 15th April by Richard Caborn MP. Claire Derrick from the College Publicity / Marketing department came to us with a clever design which we needed to re-produce.

Having used The Display Link’s services on many occasions to produce large format printing and various displays and exhibitions Claire knew the job was an ideal project for us to see through from start to finish.

How it was produced - The plaque was created using various processes. Firstly, the back plate was made from 1mm thick brushed effect steel. We commissioned a third party supplier to acid burn the architectural image onto it. (Acid burning can be produced from any ‘vector’ based artwork). Next we CNC routed (cut to shape) the 10mm thick clear acrylic and polished the edges. (The thicker the acrylic the smarter the effect). Likewise the orange spark was also routed, from 5mm thick orange glossy perspex. Finally we applied the wording which was produced from black self adhesive vinyl.

Installation - The whole plaque was then attached to a wall in the nursery reception area. Upon install we added depth to the plaque by using 25mm deep chrome ’stand off’ fixings for the acrylic and 10mm thick spacers for the orange perspex. Adding depth to a display especially when using 10mm thick acrylic can create some wonderful ‘prism like’ reflections and shadows.

Claire was delighted with the final result, ‘Sometimes when you design something like this in a two dimensional format you don’t always know how effective the final item will look. On this occasion I couldn’t have expected the display to look any better. Thanks to The Display Link for yet another job well done’.

Julie Szurko (Head of the Publicity Unit) commented, ‘Thank you for such a brilliant job. It is one thing having the design idea but another one making it happen. I like the fact that it looks substantial and yet delicate at the same time, it also conveys what I wanted from it which was young, bright, new and alive. We will certainly be back for more’.

The Display Link would like to thank The Sheffield College Publicity Unit for their continued support. ‘Good luck’ with your move in 2010.
